Product details

VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support is a complete and balanced dry food for dogs with temporary or chronic kidney disease. It’s expertly formulated to support your dog’s kidney function while helping them to maintain optimal body condition.

Ideal nutrient ratios for dogs with kidney disease
VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support contains a restricted amount of high-quality proteins (20.5% of which 70% of animal origin) to help preserve lean muscle mass without adding additional strain on the kidneys. This is balanced with high energy density to give your dog the energy they need from smaller portions – ideal for periods of appetite loss.

Low in phosphorous to preserve kidney function
Phosphorus is an essential mineral, but in dogs with compromised kidney health they are not able to filter it effectively. VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support contains low levels of phosphorus (0.4%) to help protect your dog’s kidney function. It also features chitosan, an ingredient that binds to phosphorus and reduces levels in the body.

Reduces the risk of secondary health issues
VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support helps to limit the risk of other health conditions associated with kidney disease. It contains:

  • Balanced calcium and phosphorus to protect against secondary hyperparathyroidism.
  • Adapted protein level to reduce production of uraemic toxins whilst maintaining body condition.
  • Calcium carbonate to help limit the risk of metabolic acidosis.

Supportive nutrients for overall health and wellbeing
VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support features a blend of ingredients designed to support your dog’s overall wellbeing:

  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to limit oxidative stress on the kidneys and other organs.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids support skin and coat health and help to limit inflammation.
  • Bentonite helps protect the digestive wall against damage linked to uremic toxins.
  • Chitosan & Calcium carbonate are phosphorus binders that help reduce urinary excretion of phorphorus

VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support is an ideal dog food for kidney disease in both adult and senior dogs. Rich in naturally tasty, high-quality animal ingredients to help with palatability.

FAQ

VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support is a dog food for kidney disease in adult and senior cats. It is suitable for all stages of chronic kidney disease and for temporary renal insufficiency (poor kidney function) and chronic hepatic disease (liver disease). It is not suitable for puppies or for pregnant or lactating dogs. Always check with your veterinarian before giving your dog a therapeutic dog food for kidney disease to make sure it’s safe and appropriate for their individual needs.

VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support is formulated to help your dog maintain kidney function and optimal body condition. It does this with: • A restricted amount of high-quality proteins to preserve muscle mass. • High energy density to support energy needs even with a low appetite. • Low carbohydrates to help your dog maintain a healthy weight. • Very low phosphorus content to reduce strain on the kidneys and slow disease progression. • Chitosan to bind phosphorous and reduce levels even further.

You can find recommended rations for VETERINARY HPM® K1 Kidney Support on this page and on the product packaging. Remember that the recommended rations are based on your dog’s current body weight and whether this weight is overweight, normal or underweight for them. If you are unsure what a normal weight is for your dog, consult your vet for advice. The recommended rations will change if your dog gains or loses weight, or their body condition (overweight, normal, underweight) changes. To ensure you’re feeding your dog the correct amount, weight them every month and adjust their ration if necessary. If in doubt about how much to feed your dog, always ask your vet for guidance.

It’s always a good idea to introduce new foods slowly. Try mixing a small amount of the new food with your dog’s current food, gradually increasing the amount until they’re exclusively eating the new food. Use the following schedule as a guide for a successful transition: • Days 1-2 – 75% current food and 25% new food. • Days 3-4 – 50% current food and 50% new food. • Days 5-6 – 25% current food and 75% new food. • Day 7 onwards – 100% new food.

A dog should drink approximately 50-70ml of water per kg of body weight per day. Increased thirst can sometimes be a sign of other health conditions, including chronic kidney disease. If your dog is drinking significantly more than usual or cannot seem to satisfy their thirst, always speak to your vet about your concerns.
